Girls' Community Projects

Winners!!

Some fantastic entries.  The girls have all commented on how grateful they are to have had the opportunity to think of a project to carry out. They are very enthusiastic about helping their communities.

First Prize $200 - Sampours and Panha - Library/Books

Here seen negotiating for the books at Oressay Market...

Second Prize $150 - Sodalin, Rachana, Cheata and Soklida - Sanitation Project

We went to Kandal Province yesterday and scoped out the grotty toilets which exist at the school. No access, no running water and broken doors (meaning you can't squat down to use the toilet without being seen).  Girls came in 1987 to build these toilets and now girls are fixing them!  The principal has decided that once fixed, the toilets will be kept for use by girls only.  There will also be a plaque thanking the Harpswell girls for their help.

Third - Vechou, Koeurn and Pang - Orphanage Project

This is a little orphanage in Phnom Penh.  The team has done great work already.  They plan to run workshops on how to brush your teeth and look after yourself, nutrition and reading.

All the others receive cinema vouchers!

Project Brief

The best community project proposal received from a team of 2 or more TT Dormitory Harpswell students will win $200 towards the cost of that project.

The aim is to encourage the Harpswell girls to learn about putting
together a project proposal and to help others at the same time.

The community project has to benefit people living in Phnom Penh or their home province.

It can relate to anything from education, health care, nutrition, rubbish collection/recycling, business development or helping the environment.

In addition to submitting a formal project bid setting out the details of their project and who it will impact, they have to provide a written financial proposal with the estimate cost and how the $200 will be spent.

All applications have to be received by 31 July 2013.

So far...

We have four teams.

They are all really excited and so happy to have the chance to do something which makes a difference.

1 Por and Kimsreang - Following on from their work with BBC Media Action to build a community hall in their province, Por and Kimsreang need to buy books.  They want to enable literate locals to take part in a volunteer programme to read to the children in their province. Por and Kimsreang plan to appoint team leaders who will report to them both in Phnom Penh.

2 Bopha and Sreypov - Teaching 150 students at their former high school about goal setting, achieving your aims, securing scholarships (in order to continue education) and working in Phnom Penh.

3 Panha and Sampours - Library at their high school, establishing a library system, educating the children about how to use the library and read to one another.

4 Vechou, Pang and Koeurn - The orphanage project.  I visited the orphanage today. 25 children ranging from a young child maybe 2 or 3 to 17 year olds.  Working together to live in a small house off a quiet street.  They have classes with volunteer teachers and share two bathrooms, two study rooms, a kitchen area and sleep on the floor across three bedrooms (no beds).  Run by a Khmer lady who has just had a baby.  Khmer lady's mother does the cooking for all the children and a factory gives them rice.  Total running cost is about $300 a month and they have a USA donor family who gives them part of that.  They are a little grubby and most have rotten teeth.  The Harpswell students in this team want to run sessions to teach the children how to wash themselves, brush their teeth, look after their immediate environment and then also look at nutrition, working in teams and how to be a good student.

5 Vatey and three others - SEALNet Cambodia Concert promoting rights for disabled people.

6 Cheata, Sodalin, Rachana and Soklida - Sanitation project at their old high school. 1000 students and no toilet. It means fewer girls attend regularly.

Want to sponsor a project?

Becky from a major London city law firm has very generously donated $200 to pay for Project 4.

I plan, subject to their proposal being decent enough, to give a $200 prize to all the teams.

If you would also like to donate towards a specific project you can do so via the link on the right hand side of the blog.
